According to the company, founder Giles Walterscheid worked for another manufacturer for 24 years before trying his hand at his own business. He was a machinist for his career and as a hobbyist, using two manual machines at his home to repair farm and oilfield equipment. His love of the industry motivated him to set out on his own, so he purchased the first two computer numerical control (CNC) machines he required to launch Superior Machining & Fabrication in 1995. Since then, the company has remained family owned and operated, employing three generations of the Walterscheid family and extended family members of many of its employees, according to Superior Machining & Fabrication.

Today, the company serves clients in the aerospace, defense, oil and gas, and mining industries. Superior Machining & Fabrication has grown to 140 employees and has over 90 CNC machines inside its 100,000-square-foot facility.

Superior Machining & Fabrication relies on a variety of machines to provide the quality its customers require for their products.

These machines include a bridge mill, vertical and horizontal CNC machines, CNC lathe-turning centers and waterjet cutters.

Tools of the Trade

Through its tooling division, Superior Tooling Products, Superior Machining & Fabrication manufactures a variety of products, from off-the-shelf standards to full-blown special tools. The company also is a full-service custom tool manufacturer.

“We have experience and technical expertise to handle the most demanding applications,” the company states. “We work closely with our customers as a partner, serving as an extension of their manufacturing and engineering departments.

Complex Components

Superior Machining & Fabrication understands the need for strict tolerances for aerospace and defense components.

“When [customers] need aerospace components for a defense or aviation project, finding the right aerospace supplier is essential,” the company states. “Whether [they] require an FAI [first article inspection] for a prototype satellite component or an LTA [long-term agreement] for production parts on an aircraft, Superior Machining has the resources and skills needed to deliver [their] CNC parts on time at a competitive price.”

Since Superior Machining & Fabrication’s machine shop features multiple four-axis horizontal machines, including an automated cell equipped with 56 pallets, three four-axis verticals and five-axis CNC machining centers along with two three-axis CNC turning lathes, the company says it is equipped to manufacture components in a variety of sizes and complex shapes.

“Our core expertise is thin-walled turned and milled machined parts,” Superior Machining & Fabrication states. “We’re also able to produce components using a wide variety of aerospace materials, from basic aluminum and steel to advanced alloys.”

For the oil and gas industry, Superior Machining & Fabrication boasts that it has the CNC lathe-turning machines this sector demands.

The company is able to manufacture parts in a variety of complexities and with dimensions up to 32 inches in diameter and 120 inches long in one of its many two-axis CNC lathe-turning machines.

“Our staff has a combined 856 years of manufacturing experience and can use these machines to produce even the most complex components,” Superior Machining & Fabrication says. “Our machine shop has more than enough lathes and multi-axis machining centers to handle large orders and rapid reaction for prototyping services and other rush orders.”

Also, the company’s machine shop is certified annually for ISO 9001:2000 and AS9100c quality control, and Superior uses statistical process controls to ensure it’s operating well below the industry standard for parts per million.

“Our machine shop has room for expansion of new cells and contains enough horizontal and vertical machining centers to handle high-mix and high-volume orders,” Superior Machining & Fabrication states.
